DAA Calls On SIPTU to Withdraw Strike Notice and Enter Talks

March 26, 2009

The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) is hugely disappointed by SIPTU’s decision to serve notice of industrial action for next Thursday, April 2, despite the fact that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has called off strike action and agreed to enter talks.

SIPTU has informed the DAA that its members at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports will stop work between 4am and noon next Thursday April 2. This planned strike is totally unwarranted and will cause needless concern and inconvenience to the travelling public.

The stated reason for the industrial action is the non payment of pay increases under the national wage agreement and the non payment of certain increments. These are exactly the same grounds on which SIPTU served strike notice for next Monday’s national day of action, which has now been cancelled. The DAA calls on SIPTU to immediately lift the threat of industrial action and enter talks.

The DAA has written to SIPTU’s representatives and indicated that all matters relating to the national wage agreement should be considered within the talks between the social partners on a new national agreement. In relation to increments, which are outside the national wage agreement, the DAA has indicated that this issue is best dealt with under the auspices of the Labour Relations Commission (LRC).
