DAA Welcomes American Airlines’ New Daily Dublin-New York Service

Dublin To Have More US Connectivity Than Gatwick or Manchester Next Summer

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) welcomes today’s announcement by American Airlines that it is to begin a new daily Dublin-New York JFK service from next June.

American will operate the new year-round service with a Boeing 757-200 in conjunction with its Atlantic joint business partners British Airways and Iberia.

The new JFK service, which will operate from the award-winning Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport, will add extra capacity between Ireland and the United States, offering improved travel options and connectivity to both business and leisure passengers. American Airlines currently operates six flights weekly between Dublin and Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and has been serving Dublin since 2005.

“This is excellent news for the Irish economy and for Dublin Airport,” said DAA Interim Chief Executive, Oliver Cussen. “Next summer, Dublin Airport will have 12 daily scheduled flights to 9 different US airports. That puts Dublin Airport ahead of its European competitors such as Manchester and Gatwick airports in terms of US connectivity.”

Mr Cussen added that the JFK service would strengthen the business links between Dublin and the greater New York-New Jersey area, and bring additional US visitors to Ireland from next year. “Ireland is the premier location for US foreign direct investment and the United States is also a major inbound tourism market,” he said.

Mr Cussen added that the new JFK service would be launched in time for The Gathering in 2013, which is being supported by DAA. “With this new service we are looking forward to welcoming more US business and leisure visitors,” he said.

Graham Bell, American Airline’s Sales Director UK and Ireland said the company was excited to be launching the new service. “Dublin is an important market for American and I am delighted that we can now offer a direct flight to New York JFK to complement the existing flight that we operate direct to Chicago O’Hare. Both have excellent onward connections, opening up the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean to our Irish customers.”

American’s new Dublin-JFK service will be the fourth new long-haul service to be launched from Terminal 2. United Airlines introduced a new Dublin-Washington DC service earlier this year, while Emirates started operating Dublin-Dubai in January and US Airways commenced a Dublin-Charlotte NC service last year.

Subject to government approval, the new American JFK-Dublin service will go on sale from November 4. The daily flight, which will have a 9.00am departure and a 6.55am arrival time in Dublin, will be serviced by a two-class Boeing 757-200. US-bound passengers using the new service will have access to the customs pre-clearance facility at Dublin, saving time on entry into the United States.

Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport are up more than 1% this year with almost 16 million passengers travelling through the airport so far this year.
